Back in the Driver's Seat: A Father and Son's Championship
After being away from racing for five years, my son, Michael Jr., convinced me it was time to get back behind the wheel. In April of 2023, we picked up our new Camaro from Quartermax Racing and decided to tackle the wiring of the whole car as a father-son project. We plumbed the entire fuel and oil system and wired a full FuelTech FT600 system with all the supporting electronics. It was no small job, but as a racer, there's nothing more important than knowing the ins and outs of your car.
Our first outing with the new build was in the Top Sportsman class at the 2025 Yellow Bullet Nationals at Cecil County Dragway. We encountered multiple bumps in the road, including having to borrow a ProCharger from a fellow racer, something we'll be forever grateful for. After some long nights and fine adjustments, the car came alive and showed us its true potential. We ended up in the Elite Quick 16 Top Sportsman bracket and took home first place.
I can honestly say that this Camaro proved to be exactly what we had been hoping for: a reliable, powerful, and beautifully built car. Aside from the usual first-day hiccups, we couldn't be happier with the outcome.
We have yet to see this car at its fullest potential, but based on our first outing, I have a pretty good feeling that we won't be disappointed. This is just the beginning for us, and we're excited to see where this journey takes us.
